Description
A [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) composition in which the presence of a window introduces natural light as an organizing element, the woman's hair-arranging activity set against an exterior view or a wash of diffused daylight that frames her silhouette. The window motif, employed frequently in [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) bijin-ga, allows the printmaker to juxtapose interior warmth — the woman's kimono, the domestic setting — with an implied outdoor world beyond. Hirano would likely use the window's light source to motivate subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations across the figure's face and neck. The compositional axis created by the upraised arms and the vertical of the window frame gives the print structural clarity, while the reflective surface of a mirror, if present, doubles the figure and adds spatial depth within the shallow picture plane characteristic of the format.
