Description
A second variant in Yoshida's Hotakayama series, this print likely differs from its companion compositions in season, viewpoint, or weather — perhaps depicting the peaks in autumn when the high slopes show the ochres and russets of mountain grasses against exposed rock, or in summer when the sky above the summits carries dramatic cumulus formations. Yoshida's direct experience of these mountains as a climber, rather than a distant observer, gives his alpine prints a specificity of geological and meteorological observation absent from studio-based landscape work. The composition may incorporate a high-altitude lake or snowfield in the foreground to anchor the viewer's position within the alpine environment, a compositional device he used across the Japan Alps series. The degree of keyblock refinement in rendering rock texture and the precision of color registration across the sky gradation define the technical quality of this print.
