Description
This third Hotakayama composition likely records a distinct atmospheric state from the other two variants — possibly late afternoon when the western light casts long shadows across the granite faces, or an early morning view when residual mist still occupies the valleys below the massif. Yoshida's serial treatment of single mountains echoes both the tradition of Japanese landscape series such as Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji and the Western practice of painting the same motif under varying conditions. The Hotaka range's complex topography, including the knife-edge ridges connecting the principal summits, gives each composition unique formal qualities depending on the angle of view. Graded sky passages in deep ultramarine or Prussian blue, printed in multiple passes of decreasing saturation toward the horizon, frame the pale limestone and snow-covered summits characteristic of this Yoshida alpine series.
