Description
This print by Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) reflects his sustained practice of landscape documentation in the shin-hanga mode, distinguished by close personal oversight of both the carving and printing stages. Where Edo-period ukiyo-e divided labor strictly among designer, carver, printer, and publisher, Yoshida often executed his own jizuri (self-printed) impressions, giving him direct control over pigment application, baren pressure, and the variable quality of impression across individual sheets. His landscapes—whether of Japanese mountain scenery, the Inland Sea, or international sites such as the Taj Mahal—are characterized by layered color fields that build luminous atmospheric depth, particularly in passages of open sky and reflective water rendered through successive pale washes on absorbent washi.
