Description
This Yoshida woodblock print is catalogued without an individual subject title but may belong to his series of prints depicting scenes from the Indian subcontinent, which he visited in 1931 and 1932. His Indian subjects — ghats along the Ganges, temple complexes, and the Taj Mahal observed at various times of day — were produced in extended series using the same technical methods he applied to his Japanese landscapes: bokashi gradients across sky and water, strong compositional diagonals derived from Western perspective, and precise color registration across multiple carved blocks. Yoshida's shin-hanga prints are produced on high-quality washi using water-based pigments pressed with a baren, yielding the soft, blended tones that distinguish shin-hanga from earlier ukiyo-e. His jizuri impressions, marked with a personal seal indicating he printed them himself, are generally considered the most technically refined within any given edition.
