Description
Hiroshi Yoshida (1876–1950) began his career exhibiting oil paintings in Western juried exhibitions before pivoting to woodblock printmaking, and this dual formation shaped his mature style. His compositions apply naturalistic perspective and tonal modeling to the flat color fields and incised line quality of the nishiki-e tradition, producing landscapes that read simultaneously as observational studies and as works rooted in the material properties of mokuhanga. Yoshida's extensive international travels—he visited the United States, Europe, India, and China multiple times—brought Japanese woodblock printing to Western collectors during the interwar period and positioned him as a key figure in the internationalization of the shin-hanga aesthetic. His prints of the Japan Alps, coastal scenery, and garden architecture remain among the most technically refined examples of Showa-period mokuhanga.
