Description
A companion print to the Lantern Maker, also dated 1926, this work depicts artisans applying ink and pigment designs to completed chôchin lanterns. The subject captures a moment in the production process when the lantern's translucent washi surface is being decorated with calligraphy or pictorial motifs, a delicate task requiring controlled brushwork on a curved, slightly flexible form. Yoshida's representation of artisans at work participates in a broader Taishō-period interest in documenting traditional craft before industrial production displaced it. Technically, the print likely uses careful rendering of the painted lanterns to showcase the contrast between the flat, ink-applied surface designs and the three-dimensional forms of the hanging and stacked lanterns. The interior workshop setting would have allowed Yoshida to explore diffused natural light entering from shoji screens, rendered through graduated bokashi passages.
