Description
Suzhou (Sōshū in Japanese reading), the canal city in Jiangsu Province, China, was a recurring subject for Yoshida during his travels in East Asia. This second treatment of the subject likely presents a variant perspective or lighting condition of the same waterway or architectural setting explored in the companion print. Suzhou's whitewashed walls, arching stone bridges, and willow-lined canals offered compositional material well suited to Yoshida's interest in reflections and atmospheric water surfaces. The city's classical garden culture and its association with Chinese literati aesthetics would have resonated with Japanese viewers. Yoshida's key-block lines would define the distinctive curved bridge forms and tile-capped walls, while graduated washes rendered the light diffused through humid air above the water channels.
