From Yoshida's Twelve Scenes of Tokyo series, depicting the city under dramatic atmospheric conditions. Night and rain scenes within the Tokyo series combine two premium price drivers, and Yoshida's treatment of Tokyo in transitional light is considered among his most accomplished urban work. Limited to 75 impressions for certain designs within this series.
Kagurazaka in Shinjuku ward was one of Tokyo's liveliest entertainment and geisha quarters in the early Showa period, and here Yoshida captures it transformed by a night rain into a gleaming corridor of lantern light reflected in wet cobblestones. The nocturnal urban scene demonstrates his exceptional range — from alpine peaks to rainy city streets — and his mastery of printing luminosity in dark, wet conditions. Puddles and reflections multiply the light sources, creating an almost cinematic atmosphere.
