Description
Thunder and Showers depicts a Korean farming landscape struck by a summer storm, combining the visual drama of dark, charged skies with the low, horizontal topography of the Korean plains that Hiyoshi Mamoru observed firsthand. Unlike the shelter-seeking moment of the Amayadori series, this composition engages the meteorological event itself — the simultaneous presence of thunder and rain over an open agricultural expanse. Diagonal rain lines, likely cut into a dedicated block, would cross the composition against a sky rendered in deep [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations from near-black cloud to paler, rain-hazy distance. Figures in the middle ground, possibly farmers returning from fields with tools or A-frame carriers, convey the scale of the landscape and the urgency imposed by the storm. The print belongs to Hiyoshi's sustained engagement with Korean weather and rural custom across his three-decade residency.
