The [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) movement in which he participated drew on the tradition of [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) printmaking while updating its subjects and technical approach for a modern audience. Hodo's contribution to this movement included [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) depicting women in traditional settings and kachō-ga celebrating the flowers, birds, and seasonal landscapes of the Japanese year.
