Description
Tanabata, the Star Festival held in early July or August depending on region, commemorates the once-yearly meeting of the celestial lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi across the Milky Way. The Sendai celebration is recognized for its elaborate streamers (fukinagashi) and decorated bamboo branches hung with wish-papers ([tanzaku](/glossary/tanzaku)). Ido's woodblock likely depicts these tall bamboo decorations against an urban setting — their cascading paper streamers offering an opportunity for the colored printing capacities of [nishiki-e](/glossary/nishiki-e) to register layers of pink, green, gold, and purple paper. The print fits within Ido's broader documentary impulse to record traditional Japanese festivals and seasonal observances alongside his Kyoto subjects. The composition typically frames the streamers from below, emphasizing their vertical fall and the craftsmanship visible against summer sky.
