Description

Dokan-yamashita, a district at the foot of a hill associated with the medieval warlord Ota Dokan who built Edo Castle, is shown here in one of Yasuji's quieter topographic studies. The area lay in what is now central Tokyo, and by the Meiji period it had become a busy commercial zone where old Edo street patterns persisted alongside new government buildings and Western-influenced shopfronts. Yasuji's composition records the layering of old and new Tokyo with the unaffected directness that marks his distinctive documentary voice.
