Woodblock print

Description

The cherry trees of Mukojima — the long embankment along the eastern bank of the Sumida River famous for its spring blossoms — are the subject of this seasonal print. Mukojima's cherry viewing was among the great popular pleasures of Edo, drawing crowds from across the city each spring, and the tradition continued well into the Meiji period. Yasuji captures the trees in bloom with the understated naturalism that characterizes his landscape views, avoiding the dramatic conventions of older ukiyo-e in favor of a fresh, observational clarity.
