Description
Susaki was a low-lying peninsula jutting into Tokyo Bay at the southern edge of the city's reclaimed lands, its tidal mudflats and fishing communities representing an older, slower Tokyo untouched by the pace of Meiji modernization. Yasuji's view of the area captures the flat, watery horizon that defined the bay's edge districts, where herons fished in the shallows and small boats worked the nearshore waters. The print belongs to his documentation of the maritime margins of the city, landscapes that would eventually disappear under landfill and industrial development.
