True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Below Dokanyama Hill
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
The area below Dokanyama Hill — named for the medieval warlord Ota Dokan — lay in the transitional zone between the high city (yamanote) and the low city (shitamachi), where the terrain of old Edo's hills gave way to the flatlands. Yasuji depicts this topographically interesting district with attention to the way the land itself shaped urban development, the slope providing both drama and a natural boundary between different social worlds. The hill and its surroundings were beginning to change character in the Meiji period as new institutions and residents moved into the area.
