Description
Dokanyama Hill in the Nishi-Nippori district was associated historically with the medieval warrior-poet Ōta Dōkan and had become by the Meiji period a popular viewing site offering panoramic views over the lower city to the west. The hill's gentle elevation above the flat Kantō plain made it a favored spot for depicting Tokyo's expanding skyline, including newly built Western-style buildings and factory smokestacks alongside traditional rooflines. Yasuji's view likely employs a horizontal format to capture the wide panorama from the hill's crest, with figures in the foreground providing scale against the distant cityscape. The tonal contrast between the dark wooded slope in the foreground and the hazy, open distance beyond reflects the atmospheric approach learned from Kiyochika. As both urban scene and landscape, the print exemplifies the dual character of the "True Pictures" series: documenting specific, nameable locations while capturing the visual character of a city in rapid transformation during the 1880s.
