True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo: Kanda Myojin Shrine
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
Kanda Myojin Shrine — one of the great guardian shrines of Edo, patron of merchants and craftsmen throughout the old city — is depicted here within its Akihabara hilltop setting, the shrine buildings visible among trees above the surrounding urban neighborhoods. Yasuji's treatment captures the shrine's architectural distinctiveness while situating it within the broader fabric of the city it protected. By the Meiji period, Kanda Myojin had also become associated with the new Meiji state as a site for official ceremonies, its ancient civic role continuing under a new political dispensation.
