Ueno Park, from
by Inoue Yasuji

by Inoue Yasuji
$1,000–$8,000. Common views: $1,000–$2,500. Key value factors: Inoue's Meiji-era Tokyo views, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika, have both artistic and historical value. His early death makes works scarce.
Ueno Park from an elevated viewpoint offers Yasuji one of his broader topographic prospects, the park's tree cover and institutional buildings spread below with the city beyond. Ueno was established on the high plateau of the yamanote, and its elevated position gave views northward and westward over the residential neighborhoods spreading toward the city's margins. Yasuji's high viewpoint composition belongs to his interest in capturing the topographic drama of the city, where the hills of the west looked out over the flat eastern lowlands extending to the bay.
