Description
The sixth coleus variant in Taisui's extended series continues the exploration of this ornamental-foliage subject across multiple compositions. In Japanese botanical prints of the shin-hanga period, coleus was an unusual choice — more common in nursery catalogs than fine-art print series — which underscores Taisui's interest in the purely formal qualities of patterned leaves. This print likely presents a slightly different leaf arrangement or colorway from its companions, perhaps featuring leaves with stronger purple or burgundy tones. The washi ground would have been printed with a neutral wash before the botanical blocks were applied, establishing the soft atmospheric quality that links all prints in this series under the Sakai-Kawaguchi imprint.
