Untitled (inuzuka-taisui)

An undocumented woodblock print from Inuzuka Taisui's catalog of shin-hanga nature subjects. The kacho-e genre in which Taisui worked has a rich lineage in Japanese printmaking, with Edo-period masters like Ohara Koson and Imao Keinen establishing the format that shin-hanga artists would later refine. What distinguished the shin-hanga approach was its emphasis on naturalistic observation over the more stylized and decorative tendencies of earlier schools. Taisui's prints sit within this naturalist tradition, presenting flowers and plants as they appear in life rather than as idealized decorative motifs. The undated and untitled status of this work suggests it may have been produced as part of a larger set or series whose individual titles were tracked by the publisher rather than inscribed on the prints themselves.
