Ippitsusai Buncho's [yakusha-e](/glossary/yakusha-e) portrait of Ichimura Uzaemon IX in the role of the monk Seigen documents a specific run of Ise-goyomi Daidō Ninen at the Ichimura Theater in the autumn of 1768. Seigen is one of kabuki's celebrated obsessed-priest roles, the apostate monk whose passion for the courtesan Sakurahime drives the tragic action of the play, and Buncho's print fixes that intensity in a single contained image. The Art Institute of Chicago preserves the impression and records the performance details that anchor the sheet to its theatrical occasion. Compositionally, the standing or seated figure of Uzaemon IX is given Buncho's characteristic treatment: a costumed body built from broad fields of patterned cloth, an underlying line that organizes the drapery's mass without ornamenting it, and a more carefully drawn face that registers the role's mounting torment in the set of the brow and the closed mouth. Ichimura Uzaemon IX was both the head of the Ichimura theatrical line and one of the era's leading male-role actors, and Buncho's portrayal participates in the broader 1760s shift in Edo [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) toward recognizable performer likenesses that paralleled — and competed with — the contemporaneous output of Katsukawa Shunshō. The sheet thus stands as a representative example of the densely documented, performance-specific yakusha-e on which Buncho's reputation rests, embedding a particular evening of kabuki within the printed record of late-1760s Edo culture.
