Description
A recurring theme in Shinsui's [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) output, this print depicts a woman in the moments following her bath, an intimate domestic subject inherited from [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) masters such as Utamaro and Kiyonaga. Shinsui returned to the after-the-bath theme repeatedly across his career, producing several treatments that vary in pose, dress, and setting. The print typically shows a figure with damp hair pinned up or hanging loose, dressed in a yukata or thin cotton wrap, conveying the warmth and slight flush of recent immersion. Shinsui's handling of skin tones relies on subtle [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradations achieved by the printers working with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, with whom Shinsui collaborated on most of his [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) designs. The composition reduces background detail to direct attention to the figure's posture and expression. As with Hashiguchi Goyo's slightly earlier bath subjects, the print exemplifies the shin-hanga reinterpretation of an older ukiyo-e theme through a quieter, more psychologically inward framing.
