Shinsui is Japan's preeminent shin-hanga bijin-ga master. His "Modern Beauties" and related series remain in strong demand, with provenance from notable collections (Freddie Mercury's collection appeared at Sotheby's 2023) adding premium value.
A maiko of the Gion district walks or stands in formal dress, the young apprentice geisha's distinctive appearance—trailing furisode kimono, white collar, elaborate kanzashi ornaments—making her one of Shinsui's most visually complex [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) subjects. Published in July 1932, the print belongs to a period when Shinsui was producing some of his most technically refined beauty prints for Watanabe's publishing house. The maiko subject bridges his bijin-ga work and his occasional engagement with Kyoto's traditional performance culture.
