Description
A study of a young girl examining her reflection, this print reflects Shinsui's interest in transitional moments of self-awareness and the quieter genre subjects within his oeuvre. The compact mirror — a modern accessory associated with Taisho and Showa-era femininity — suggests a contemporary subject rather than a historical or classical figure. Compositions of this kind typically center the figure in three-quarter view, with the reflective face of the mirror tilted to catch light and the carved keyblock describing the precise contours of the small object. The identification of the subject as a child distinguishes the print from Shinsui's mature [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) and aligns it with works such as his depictions of girls at play. The woodblock medium, with its layered registration of clothing patterns and skin tones, allowed Shinsui to render the textile motifs of a child's kimono with the patience characteristic of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) collaborative production.
