Description
"Whisper" evokes the intimate genre of sasayaki — a paired composition in which one figure leans toward another's ear — a motif with a long history in [ukiyo-e](/glossary/ukiyo-e) [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) from Harunobu and Utamaro onward. Shinsui's treatment would have rendered the moment through the angled inclination of the heads, with the listening figure's expression conveyed through the most economical of brush strokes around the eyes and mouth. Two-figure compositions of this kind require the carver to register multiple flesh-tone blocks against intricate kimono pattern blocks, with the [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation along collar lines and obi edges executed by the printer through controlled wiping at the time of impression. The psychological focus on a moment of confidence or shared knowledge places the print within the more inward turn of [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) bijin-ga, distinguishing it from the genre scenes of the Edo period. Shinsui returned to two-figure intimate compositions throughout his career, often producing them in the standard [oban](/glossary/oban) tate format favored by his publishers.
