$200–$1,500. Common bird prints: $200–$500. Key value factors: Ito Sozan's bird-and-flower prints are charming and affordably priced. Well-preserved examples with vivid color are most valued.
Bijin and Sparrow pairs two of the most traditional subjects in Japanese art: a beautiful woman and a small bird. The bijin, dressed presumably in kimono with elaborately styled hair, and the sparrow, a common but symbolically rich bird in Japanese culture, create a composition that plays on contrasts of scale, stillness and movement, human and animal. Sparrows are among the most frequently depicted birds in Japanese art, associated with cheerfulness, community, and the humble pleasures of daily life. Sozan renders this pairing in the [oban](/glossary/oban) woodblock format, using the medium's capacity for both fine detail in the woman's costume and features and lively gestural energy in the sparrow's posture. The interaction between figure and bird, whether the woman is watching, feeding, or simply coexisting with the sparrow, creates a moment of gentle connection.
