$200–$1,500. Tree compositions are among the artist's most valued subjects. Good kacho-e: $500–$1,000. Key value factors: Ito Sozan's bird-and-flower prints are charming and affordably priced. Well-preserved examples with vivid color are most valued.
In this unusual [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e), two gulls are depicted in conjunction with a blossoming cherry tree, a pairing that combines a coastal bird species with an inland flowering plant. The combination is unusual enough to suggest a deliberately decorative rather than strictly naturalist composition — one likely designed to appeal to Western buyers who associated both [sakura](/glossary/sakura) and seabirds with Japan's distinctive natural scenery. The gulls, rendered in white and grey with yellow-orange bills, would contrast with the pale pink cherry blossoms drifting across the composition. The cherry tree's gnarled branch structure, printed in dark ink, provides an angular framework against which the gulls' smooth forms and the soft blossoms are set. Sozan's handling of the blossoms — achieved through multiple pink-and-white impression passes — would require careful [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation within each petal cluster.
