$200–$1,500. Tree compositions are among the artist's most valued subjects. Good kacho-e: $500–$1,000. Key value factors: Ito Sozan's bird-and-flower prints are charming and affordably priced. Well-preserved examples with vivid color are most valued.
This nocturnal scene depicts a woman standing or pausing near a cherry tree in full bloom beneath a full moon. The compositional elements — bijin figure, sakura, and moonlight — represent three of the most resonant subjects in the Japanese pictorial tradition, and their combination in a single print places it in a lineage running from Edo-period ukiyo-e through the shin-hanga movement's revival of figure-landscape integration. The full moon would be rendered as bare washi or with a pale yellow-gold gradation, its circular form positioned to illuminate the white cherry blossoms from above. The woman's kimono, rendered in carefully layered pigments, would serve as the primary color focal point against the predominantly pale nocturnal palette. Bokashi gradations in the sky — from deep indigo near the top to softer blue around the moon — frame the scene with controlled atmospheric depth.
