Description
Green Ray takes its title from the rare atmospheric optical phenomenon — a flash of green light visible at the precise moment the sun descends below a clear sea horizon. Jules Verne popularized the phenomenon in an 1882 novel, and it has since carried associations with longing and rare vision. Escudero's etching on Hahnemühle 350 gr paper likely depicts the liminal instant of sunset over open water, with the plate's bitten marks differentiating the dense lower sea from a sky compressed into thin tonal bands near the horizon. In monochrome intaglio, capturing a phenomenon defined by color presents a compositional challenge Escudero likely resolves through tonal contrast and a concentrated focal point at the horizon line. The heavy paper supports both the fine descriptive line work and any aquatint grain used to render the atmospheric gradation above and below the horizon.
