Description
Despite the title's spelling — 'sent' for 'scent' is a common transcription error in dealer listings of his work — this print belongs to Mibugawa's group of atmospheric landscapes that take an invisible quality of place as their nominal subject. The image likely shows a field, lane, or coastal stretch in which movement is implied by the bend of grasses, the angle of branches, or the run of clouds, rather than depicted directly. Mibugawa's mokuhanga technique on [washi](/glossary/washi) favours soft pastel [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) over crisp outlines, so wind in his prints tends to register as tonal drift rather than graphic mark-making. The work sits alongside 'Silence' and 'Spring breeze in rice field' as part of a sensory-titled group within his catalogue. Carved and printed at Unsōdō in Kyoto, it reflects his unusual position straddling the publisher-led [shin-hanga](/glossary/shin-hanga) model and the sōsaku-hanga ethos of the artist working all three roles of designer, carver, and printer.
