Description

The remains of the old barrier post at Arai, on Lake Hamana in Shizuoka Prefecture, mark the memory of one of the Tokaido's three great checkpoints — a toll and inspection point that controlled movement along the highway for centuries. Sekino's interest in these institutional ruins reflects a broader postwar reckoning with Edo-era governance structures, the checkpoint's physical remains now picturesque evidence of a more controlled social order.
