Description
The station of Kusatsu in Shiga Prefecture — the fifty-second station and effectively the last before Kyoto — appears here through the entrance to one of its famous tea houses, the threshold that both welcomed arriving travelers and marked the journey's near-completion. The tea house entry is architectural theater: the curved roof, the noren curtain, the suggestion of warmth and refreshment within after the long walk from Edo.
