Description

This print belongs to Sekino's Ichimokushu series, a significant body of work in which he produced single-subject prints exploring a wide range of themes. The title Midnight situates the image in darkness, suggesting a nocturnal street scene, a lone figure, or an atmospheric urban composition rendered in deep indigo and black with selective use of lighter tones to suggest lamplight or moonlight. Sekino's sosaku-hanga practice, in which the artist designs, carves, and prints each work independently, gave him latitude to experiment with dark-field compositions that are difficult to achieve in commercial printing. The series format allowed him to develop thematic continuity across multiple works while investigating the expressive potential of extreme tonal contrast on washi paper.
