Description
This portrait pays homage to Kōshirō Onchi (1891–1955), the founding theorist of the sōsaku-hanga movement and one of Sekino's most important mentors. Executed the year after Onchi's death, the print likely depicts its subject in a contemplative pose, rendered with the expressive freedom central to sōsaku-hanga—in which the artist designs, cuts, and prints each impression himself. Sekino's use of selective bokashi gradients and restrained ink tones would distinguish the image from the flat commercial portraiture of the era. The work functions both as an elegy and as an affirmation of the creative print tradition Onchi championed, situating Sekino within a lineage he helped carry forward through the postwar decades.
