Description

Hokkaido Early Spring captures the brief transitional season on Japan's northernmost main island, when snow lingers on the ground but the light has lengthened and the first signs of thaw are visible. Sekino's composition likely sets bare tree branches, exposed earth, or a farmhouse silhouette against residual snowfields, using a cooler palette than his summer prints — pale greys, faded ochres, and the off-white of unprinted washi — held together by the assured black key line he cut into the woodblock himself. Bokashi gradations in the sky or along melting drifts would suggest the damp, diffuse atmosphere specific to Hokkaido in March or April. Born in Aomori and lifelong observer of the northern provinces, Sekino traveled repeatedly through Tohoku and Hokkaido, and this print belongs to a body of seasonal landscapes that runs in parallel to his portrait, theater, and townscape work within the sosaku-hanga movement.
