Description

This woodblock print responds to one of the most celebrated themes in Japanese visual culture: the flowering of spring, most likely cherry blossoms (sakura) or possibly plum (ume), with which the Japanese artistic tradition marks the end of winter and the renewal of the seasonal cycle. Sekino's treatment within the sosaku-hanga mode would differ from the conventional meisho-e framing of cherry blossom viewing—his compositions typically pursue direct observation and formal invention over scenic convention. Blossoms in the woodblock medium require controlled overprinting of pale pigments, with bokashi used to vary petal density and suggest depth within clusters. The atmospheric softness of spring light—diffuse, without the strong contrasts of summer or winter—offers Sekino an opportunity to exploit the muted, warm surface qualities of washi. The title's generality suggests a lyrical rather than topographic intent, oriented toward seasonal mood and the visual sensation of bloom rather than a specific site.
