Description

This night scene captures Kyoto's ancient urban fabric at dusk or after dark, exploiting the deep indigo and black that define the night sky while animating the composition with warm pools of lantern or interior light below. The print likely depicts traditional machiya townhouses, temple rooflines, or a canal district—architectural forms that compress into flat, geometric planes well-suited to woodblock technique. Sekino, working as a sosaku-hanga artist who controlled every stage of production, would have managed the bokashi gradations describing the darkening sky with precision: amber at the horizon progressing through purple to deep blue-black overhead. Illuminated storefronts or paper lanterns would create the compositional drama between light sources and shadow that defines twilight urban imagery. The contrast between Kyoto's historical architecture and the modern night environment gives the print a quality of cultural and temporal layering.
