Fuji Northern Entrance- Asama Shrine — 富士山北口浅間神社と富士

by Jokata Kaiseki

Medium:
Woodblock print

Description

The northern entrance to Fuji — the old pilgrimage route through Kitaguchi — leads through Fujiyoshida city and the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen shrine, one of the great Asama shrines that traditionally served as the departure points for ascents of the sacred mountain. Kaiseki Jokata's composition combines the shrine's torii and precincts with the mountain rising directly behind, the human religious space organized around and oriented toward the natural sacred object.
