Description
This historical composition depicts a gathering at Atakoyama, the hill in Edo (present-day Tokyo) that is home to Atago Shrine. The title 愛宕山集躡の図 suggests figures assembling or ascending the slope, likely rendered in period costume consistent with Edo-era dress. Kamoshita's nihonga training informs his attention to textile pattern and figure posture, translated here into the woodblock medium through careful keyblock line work and layered color printing. Scenes at Atakoyama carry associations with the famous mounted ascent by samurai Magaki Heikurō, lending the composition potential heroic or ceremonial overtones. The print likely employs graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) in sky areas and precise pigment registration to render the layered garments of the assembled figures. As the first in a numbered sequence, it establishes the pictorial scene before subsequent prints extend the narrative.
