Description
This print places a child figure in relation to one or more birds, a pairing that recurs across Japanese visual tradition in both [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) (flower-and-bird pictures) and genre scenes. Kawano's [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) approach brings an expressive directness to the subject: the child's form likely rendered in bold, simplified outline with flat color areas, while the birds provide contrasting movement or delicacy. The composition may exploit the tension between the static child and the implied motion of birds in flight or at rest. Kawano carved and printed his own blocks, allowing tight control over the weight of lines and the placement of color, giving even modest subjects a graphic clarity.
