Description
A composition devoted entirely to cranes allows Kawano to explore the formal and symbolic possibilities of these birds as visual elements. Cranes in flight or at rest offer dramatically different compositional opportunities: spread wings produce strong diagonal lines and large color fields, while standing cranes provide vertical accents with precise silhouette. The sosaku-hanga process, with its carved blocks and water-based pigments, suits crane subjects particularly well — the stark white of the bird's body can be achieved through the reserve of the paper surface itself, requiring no white ink. Multiple cranes in a single composition may be arranged to suggest movement, flock behavior, or formal balance, depending on whether the image draws on naturalistic or decorative precedents.
