Description
This limited-edition print depicts a dancing bijin figure in a kimono associated with the 'eshima' pattern, likely rendered in bold stripes that lend the composition graphic rhythm. Kawano's treatment of the dancing female figure evolved through repeated iterations within this series; each named variant — Camellia, Eshima, Kamuro — provided a different formal and thematic pretext while retaining his distinctive carving style. In the Eshima prints, the striped textile pattern creates visual movement that complements the figure's pose. Kawano carved his own blocks and pulled his own impressions, and the physicality of that process is visible in the quality of line and the slight variance in ink saturation across the sheet. This impression, among multiple surviving examples of the LE edition, demonstrates how Kawano's prints circulated widely among Western collectors in the postwar period.
