Description
Little Flora C is likely a bijin-ga depicting a young woman associated with flowers, either holding a floral arrangement, wearing floral-patterned kimono, or positioned within a floral setting. The designation C within the series implies at least two preceding variants — A and B — suggesting Kawano developed this composition through multiple colorways or compositional adjustments, a common practice in his studio as he responded to collector demand for particular color effects. Flora as a series title may reflect Western marketing language used by the galleries and dealers who sold Kawano's work to American and European buyers in the 1950s and early 1960s. The sosaku-hanga technique gives the petals and foliage a tactile carved quality absent from the more polished botanical renderings of shin-hanga. Kawano's bold outlines anchor the floral elements alongside the figure, maintaining the graphic coherence characteristic of his print style.
