Description
This print presents a female figure rendered in Kawano's characteristic [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) idiom, pairing the [bijin-ga](/glossary/bijin-ga) subject with references to the kabuki play Shibaraku, one of the eighteen celebrated Ichikawa family dramas. The title 'Little Flora' introduces a botanical identity for the figure, and the grey colorway replaces the vivid pigments typical of Kawano's work with a more restrained tonal palette — muted greys layered through graduated [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) washes across the [washi](/glossary/washi) ground. The bold outlines cut directly into the block, a hallmark of Kawano's expressive carving, remain prominent against the cooler background. The composition reflects the postwar sosaku-hanga practice of fusing traditional subject matter with a Western modernist sensibility, and the grey version was likely printed as a distinct edition, demonstrating how Kawano explored the same design across multiple colorways to alter mood and marketability, particularly for Western collectors drawn to his dance and figure prints.
