Description
This [kacho-e](/glossary/kacho-e) depicts a single owl rendered in Kawano's characteristically bold [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) style, with strong carved outlines defining the bird's plumage against a simplified background. Owls held symbolic resonance in Japanese culture, associated with wisdom and nocturnal mystery. Kawano's approach to animal subjects shares formal qualities with his figure prints: deliberate gouge marks articulate texture, while selective color passages—likely applied with [bokashi](/glossary/bokashi) gradation—establish depth and atmosphere. The composition focuses attention on the owl's frontal gaze, creating a sense of direct confrontation between subject and viewer. As a self-carved, self-printed work in the sosaku-hanga tradition, every mark reflects the artist's individual hand rather than the division of labor typical of earlier woodblock publishing.
