Description
"Sacred Crane D, LE" is the fourth lettered variant in Kawano's crane series, a limited edition print distinguished from the C, E, and unnumbered editions by a specific color state or compositional modification. In a series where the keyblock carving is shared and the variable element is the color registration, the D edition may introduce a background tone — perhaps a deep indigo or a warm neutral — that neither its predecessors nor successors employ. Kawano's technical approach in the [sosaku-hanga](/glossary/sosaku-hanga) tradition gave him complete authority over each inking and printing pass, allowing him to shift the tonal atmosphere of an image significantly through block sequence and pigment choice. The crane itself, with its white body and black-tipped wings, presents a natural figure-ground contrast that Kawano could exploit differently depending on whether the surrounding field is dark or light. At the D stage of a multi-variant series, Kawano was likely pushing toward more experimental combinations, exploring how the crane's symbolism — auspicious, ceremonial, associated with longevity — reads differently under changed chromatic conditions.
