Description
Kaoru Kawano (1916–1965) worked in the sosaku-hanga tradition and returned persistently to birds as subjects, situating his work within the kacho-e lineage while reflecting the modernist economy of the mid-century Japanese printmaking movement. This limited edition print depicts a single small bird—likely a sparrow, tit, or similar passerine—rendered with close attention to the species' distinctive markings, posture, and weight. Kawano's treatment of bird subjects characteristically employs a restricted palette, using subtle color gradations to describe feather texture and volumetric form without reliance on outline. The bird is typically set against a spare ground—a bare branch, a spray of vegetation, or open space—that concentrates attention on the figure and its formal properties. The limited edition designation indicates a controlled print run intended for a gallery or collector market rather than open commercial distribution. The small format is appropriate to the intimate scale of the subject and reflects Kawano's preference for measured compositions in which negative space functions as an active pictorial element.
