Description
Sylvan—森の (mori no, 'of the forest')—depicts a woodland or forest interior, a subject outside Kawano's primary figure work but consistent with the sosaku-hanga movement's broad engagement with landscape. The forest interior presents particular challenges in woodblock: vertical tree trunks must be carved with sufficient width and clarity to read against the ground, while the interlocking canopy and filtered light require careful color planning and registration. Kawano's carving technique gives tree forms a bold, sculptural presence—the gouge marks visible in trunks and branches, bark texture suggested through short, expressive cuts. The color palette might range from deep greens and olive in summer to warm ochres and sienna in autumn. The limited-edition designation indicates this was issued in a numbered run, consistent with the sosaku-hanga emphasis on the print as a singular creative work rather than a commercial commodity produced in unlimited quantity.
