Description
"Three Eyes" represents a departure from Kawano's most widely known dancing figure compositions, pointing to the broader experimental range of his sosaku-hanga output. The subject — three eyes — evokes either a multifaceted human face, a supernatural figure from Japanese folklore, or an abstracted study in gaze and perception. Kawano, working entirely independently as designer, carver, and printer, could pursue such unconventional imagery without the commercial constraints of traditional ukiyo-e collaborative production. The gouge marks and knife cuts of his carving method would give the eye forms a raw, expressive quality distinct from the smooth gradients of older nishiki-e. This limited edition print was produced in a numbered run and signed by the artist, reflecting the sosaku-hanga movement's emphasis on the print as an original work rather than a reproductive medium. The specific colorway of this impression may differ from related states of the same composition, as Kawano sometimes varied his palette between printings.
